Swift response by police officers from the Rapid Rail Police Unit resulted in the arrest of a 29 year old suspect and the recovery of cellphones. On 13 December 2019, at 09:00, an unknown man pretended to be a patron at a business premises along Malandela Road in KwaMashu.

Four armed men joined him and threatened the employees with firearms. They demanded cash and cellphones. A number of cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken at gunpoint.

Whilst the suspects were fleeing, they shot and injured a security guard (47). He was taken to hospital for medical attention. Police responded and the suspects then opened fire on police while fleeing on foot.

One suspect carrying a bag with cellphones was arrested by police. He was detained at the KwaMashu police station and will be charged for business robbery, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property.

He will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court soon.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the swift response by the Rapid Response Team.
