Bus overturns and lands on shack, Emona, Tongaat

Several residents from an informal settlement threatened to burn a bus that overturned and landed on a shack in Sita Ram Farm in Emona, Tongaat on Monday 1 October 2018.

At approximately 14:55 the Reaction Unit South Africa Robinson R44 helicopter took off from Verulam to assist in the search for the scene which occured in an isolated area. Upon arrival the South African Police and Metro Police were in attendance.

It was established that the bus was travelling through the informal settlement when the driver lost of the vehicle on a narrow, unpaved road. The vehicle then overturned and landed on its roof on an unoccupied shack.

Residents in the area gathered at the scene and threatened to burn the bus because they felt that the driver was reckless. The driver was transported to hospital by a private ambulance service after he suffered moderate injuries.

Approximately 15 other passengers sustained minor injuries however declined medical assistance.

The extensively damaged bus is currently being salvaged.
