On 30 December 2021 at 18:20, Prestbury detectives proceeded to Bellevue Road, Prestbury area in Pietermaritzburg and found the body of Sharon-Lee Deetlets (62) lying in her bedroom with bruises and strangulations marks on the neck.

She was allegedly strangled with an extension cord.

Her home was ransacked and items including speakers, two cellphones and a DVD player were missing.

Cases of robbery and murder were opened for investigation at Prestbury SAPS.

On Monday, 3 January 2022, Prestbury police officers received information about the suspect and proceeded to the Hilton area.

Upon their arrival at the said place, police officers found Douglas Mataula (35) who was employed by the deceased as her gardener, in possession of the missing belongings and he was immediately arrested.

The suspect made his first court appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court and he was remanded in custody until 12 January 2022 for a bail application hearing.
