The body of a taxi driver who went missing last week has been found in the Nonoti cane fields, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Fifty two-year-old Jayram Pillay was operating his meter taxi in KwaDukuza and the surrounding areas when he went missing on Wednesday, November 17.

Investigations led police to the eThembeni area where Pillay’s car had been sold. Pillay’s body had been dumped in sugar cane fields. He had been stabbed to death.

Three suspects, aged between 18 and 48, were arrested. Two of them face charges of murder and carjacking, while the third suspect faces a charge of receiving stolen property.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the trio appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa praised the police officers who arrested the men “for their sterling work and commitment in their investigations that led to the arrest of the murder suspects and the recovery of the hijacked vehicle”.
