On 27 January 2017, shortly after midday, Police Divers from Durban Search and Rescue along with Umhlali K9 SAR and IPSS Medical Rescue were called out to the Umgeni River in Kwadabeka below the New Bridge. A 16-year-old boy had tragically drowned after swimming near the weir to cool off.

A Dive Operation was conducted after K9 Dante indicated the location of the Victim. The body of the deceased victim was recovered from a depth of 5m. The Body was handed over to members from Kwadabeka SAPS.

Inquest docket opened.
