Bluff man survives gunshot wounds sustained during botched hijacking

A Bluff man is in stable condition in hospital after a gang of hijackers shot him during a botched hijacking on 20 January 2019.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathois said the man had travelled to Merebank to visit a family member in Darjeeling Road at around 7pm on Sunday. “A gang of four armed suspects confronted him in the driveway and attempted to hijack him of his vehicle. The man sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder and a second bullet grazed his leg during the incident. He managed to drive away in his vehicle to seek help,” Mathios said.

Mathios said the man managed to drive to the home of another relative in the suburb and he was taken to hospital for medical treatment. “The victim is in hospital in stable condition,” Mathios said.

Mathios said that in a separate incident hijackers had attempted to abduct a motorist in Umhlatazana at around 7am yesterday. “The motorist had arrived at a property in 66th Avenue to pick up family members when he was accosted by a gang of four armed suspects who arrived in a white Chevrolet Cruze. They stopped in front of the motorist’s vehicle and held up the motorist at gunpoint,” Mathios said.

“The tried to take the driver with them but he manged to get out of the vehicle before the suspects fled the scene in his vehicle,” Mathios said.

Bayview SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios advised motorists to be vigilant when arriving outside a property and to be sure to stop parallel to the verge. “If you stop parallel to the verge instead of turning into the driveway, it makes it more difficult for hijackers to jam your vehicle in. You will more easily be able to drive off should you notice any suspicious individuals or vehicle pull up nearby.”

“If you suspect that someone is following you rather drive past the property and contact your security company and the police for assistance.”

These hijackings follow a recent spate across Durban, with incidents reported in Springfield when hijackers held a gun to a little boy’s head, numerous hijacking reports in Glenmore, as well as a motorist held up and abducted in Springfield Park last week.
