Baby for Sale Rescued

Last week, a KwaZulu-Natal man accused of trying to sell a baby for ZAR600 was arrested and detained, pending an investigation. The man tried to sell the baby at local taxi rank and was being held in a bottle store, following security tip-offs.

However, the man, according to his sister, is mentally unstable, and the entire incident was a misunderstanding between the private security and the search for the baby. The baby’s mother told the police that the man had a mental problem and was not trying to sell the baby. Apparently the security company was searching for the baby who was reported missing.

The police made inquiries and discovered that the baby was not for sale. The man who is the uncle of the baby and being mentally ill was confused about the missing child. The private security company did respond swiftly, and thankfully the baby was unharmed.

What is confusing is why a mentally ill man is allowed to roam the streets when in fact he could be a danger to not only society but himself. Mental illness is a condition which causes severe disorder in a person’s behavior or thinking. It can refer to a wide range of health conditions or disorders that can affect moods, thinking and behavior. The extent of his mental illness is unknown and whether he suffered from depression, anxiety or schizophrenia is not disclosed. Based on the explanation the police received from his sister, it would appear that the man was probably more confused than dangerous, but should be taken care of and monitored.
