Years ago it was said that taxi owners could close any town and city by blocking all the entry and exit routes.
Pietermaritzburg was brought to a stand still by taxi drivers who blocked streets and ran amok burning tyres and as has happened previously, every refuse bin in the central part of the city was thrown out.
All the authorities do is to criticize the violence, instead of seizing the vehicles and arresting the rioters.
Meanwhile, there are also attempts by the ANC Youth League to similarly close Pretoria today as they are demanding the re-appointment of employees.
The organizers of the march say it is legal and that they have permission, but the mayor denies this and says that the march is illegal.
