On 4 July 2017 an alleged murder suspect, Sandile Mabaso (23) appeared in the Ezakheni Magistrates’ Court facing three counts of murder. He was remanded back in custody until 11 July 2017 for further investigation and for bail application.

The suspect was arrested by Provincial Taxi Task Team after they were following information about his whereabouts.

He was linked to tavern murder cases that were reported in October last year.

The first incident was reported on 1 October 2016 at 20:00 where the victim, Mxolisi Thabede (20) was shot and killed at a local tavern at A-section, Ezakheni. A case of murder was opened at Ezakheni police station.
A few hours later on the same day at 23:30 two victims, Lungelo Hlongwane (21) and Thoba Ndaba (25) were shot and killed at another tavern at B-section, Ezakheni. Two counts of murder were opened.

The Provincial Taxi Task Team took over the investigation and their hard work resulted in positive results when they arrested the suspect and linked him to these murders.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the members for the arrest of the suspect. “We will not tolerate criminals who attack and kill citizens in the province for no apparent reason. Our detectives will thoroughly investigate this cases and collect sufficient evidence against the suspect who killed innocent people who were enjoying themselves at taverns,” he said.
