A suspect was shot in the leg by an Alpha Armed Response Officer after he attempted to attack him several times with a screwdriver.
At about 02:28 this morning, the Alpha Armed Response Officer, who patrols the Junagarth Sector in Merebank, responded to Bhuj Road after a client spotted a suspect on his premises. The homeowner screamed and the suspect fled. Fitted with a description of the suspect, the Alpha officer searched the area and spotted a suspicious male under the bridge at Himalaya Road.
The Alpha Officer called for back-up as he approached the suspect who fitted the description given to him by the client. The suspect withdrew a screwdriver and lunged at the Alpha member several times, ignoring the officer’s warnings. The Alpha Officer withdrew his firearm and shot the suspect on the leg.
Alpha Tactical and Armed Response arrived on the scene together with police and emergency services. EMRS treated the suspect and stabilised him on scene. The suspect was taken under police guard to a local hospital.
It is believed that two suspects were spotted by residents earlier on Dacca Road where they attempted to break into a property one of which is alleged to be the shot suspect.
The matter is under investigation at Wentworth SAPS.
