A Provincial Task Team conducted an operation as part of Operation Fiela at Umlazi policing precinct and recovered two firearms. An operation was conducted at Umlazi and two suspects aged 24 and 47 were arrested.
Police recovered a revolver and a pistol with a total of nine rounds of ammunition. Suspects were charged for possession of unlicensed firearm or illegal possession of firearm. They will appear in the Umlazi Magistrates’ Court. Police also recovered ten slopes of dagga during the operation.
Both suspects will also be charged for business robbery. It is alleged that on 22 April 2018, five unknown armed males entered a supermarket in U Section, Umlazi and took an undisclosed amount of cash. Two nights after the robbery, police entered a 24 year old suspect’s house and he fired several shots at the police. No one was injured and he managed to evade the arrest. He was arrested in the early hours of yesterday morning with the firearm in his possession.
He will also be charged for attempted murder on a police officer. An extensive investigation will be conducted since one of the firearms belonged to a community member in Dassenhoek area. Suspects will also be profiled to determine whether they can be linked to other robberies in the area.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the team for the arrests.
“Such operations will continue in the province to solve pending serious and violent cases and seize unlicensed firearms. The firearms will also be sent to ballistics to determine if they were used in the commission of crime in the country,” he said.
