Armed robbery: Suspect injured in freak accident, KwaMashu

A suspect was run over while he and five accomplices were in the process of robbing a cyclist on Tuesday afternoon, 15 June 2021. A passing motorists contracted the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Phoenix Operations Center at approximately 18:04 reporting a multiple vehicle collision on the M25 in the vicinity of KwaMashu.

Reaction Officers were dispatched to the scene and on arrival were met by the cyclist who stated that while on route to his residence in Inanda he was accosted by the six robbers. One of the suspects was in possession of a firearm. They instructed him to hand over his bicycle when an altercation broke out.

A passing silver VW Polo that slowed down upon noticing the crime in progress was rear ended by a truck. The light motor vehicle then knocked into one of the suspects before colliding head on into a concrete barrier. As other vehicles slowed down several other collisions occurred.

The injured suspect attempted to flee but collapsed a few meters away from the point of impact. The occupants of the VW Polo suffered moderate injuries were transported to hospital by ambulance. A grey Renault Kwid was also extensively damaged. Several vehicles involved in the collision left the scene prior to the arrival of First Responders.

The bicycle was also wrecked in the collision.
