Armed robbery suspect arrested, Verulam

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa arrested a suspect during a robbery in progress in Verulam on Saturday 18 April 2020.

At approx 16:22 a member of the public flagged down a passing RUSA Ambulance and informed the medic that a group of men were attempting to stab a male on a bridge near Shoprite Checkers on Todd Street. The Paramedic immediately called for assistance when he noticed four men making several attempts to stab a victim during a robbery.

Reaction Officers arrived on scene whilst the robbery was in progress and the suspects attempted to flee on foot. One suspect was arrested during a scuffle with Officers. An Okapi knife and the victims mobile phone was recovered.

The 20 year old suspect was later identified as a trolley assistant at a local supermarket. He resides in Waterloo and is part of a gang that have robbed and stabbed several victims in recent weeks in the CBD.

RUSA has attended to 28 Armed and Common Robberies in the Phoenix, Verulam and Tongaat area during the Lockdown Period.
