A Manor Gardens family escaped a home invasion without injury after armed suspects forced their way into their home last night.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the family was watching television when the gunmen burst into their home. “Two suspects forced open a lounge window and gained entry into the home while the resident was busy watching television with his family. The suspects then held up the man and his family members at gunpoint but they managed to turn and run into a bathroom and lock themselves in, from where they pressed a panic button to call for help,” Mathios said. “The suspects fled with a laptop and cellphone. No injuries were reported. It is unclear how the suspects entered the property before forcing open the window,” he said. Mayville SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

In a separate incident on the Bluff in the early hours of this morning, four armed suspects gained entry onto a property and grabbed car keys to a vehicle parked in the driveway. The incident occurred at around 5am. “The suspects fled in the vehicle which was fitted with a tracking device. The vehicle was later recovered,” he said.

Members of Brighton Beach SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios advised residents to ensure that electric fences and external beams are activated on the property at night and also in the early morning before leaving for work. “Connecting your electric fence to your house alarm system and ensuring that external beams are activated provides you with an early warning system should an intruder enter the garden. It’s also advisable to install a cost effective anti-gatecrashing kit which can be connected to your home security system. This additional security measure will sound the alarm if anyone attempts to tamper with your driveway gate,” he said.
