Security officers from Alpha Alarms nabbed an armed robbery suspect this morning and rescued him from an angry mob after he, together with an accomplice, robbed two females of their handbag and cellphone on Mahes Road in Reunion, Isipingo.
At about 6:30am, the Alpha Alarms security officers were in the Isipingo vicinity when they were alerted to the commotion and saw an African male running towards Old Main Road.
The security officers sprung into action and cornered the suspect on Old Main Road.
The suspect pulled out a large knife but was quickly subdued.
A furious mob of passersby and taxi drivers descended and attacked the suspect ripping his clothes in the process. The suspect was removed from the clutches of the incensed mob and was escorted to the spot where the handbag was dumped.
The handbag was retrieved as well as most of its contents. The suspect told the security officers that he had stashed the cellphone and cash in his pockets before discarding the handbag.
The cellphone was also retrieved from the suspect’s discarded clothing but the cash, estimated to be about R150, and one of the victim’s driver’s license could not be accounted for.
SAPS were called out to the scene and the suspect was handed over.
Both the female victims were ecstatic to have their belongings returned to them and thanked the Alpha officers profusely for their quick action.
