A 33-year-old suspect is expected to appear in Court on 16 February 2021, for being in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. On 7 January 2021, police officers from the Ethekwini District Trio Task Team were tracking a hijacked vehicle that they spotted the vehicle on Siyanda Road. When the suspects realised that police were following them, they opened fire on the police officers.

One suspect was arrested and was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition. An attempted murder case was opened at the Cato Manor police station for further investigation.

On 15 February 2021, at 11:45, police officers from the Ethekwini District Trio Task Team received information that the suspect was seen around the Nsimbini area. While proceeding to where the suspect was seen, the police officers received a report of a hijacked vehicle in the Nsimbini area. The complainant was interviewed and further provided police with a full description of the suspect.

The team worked tirelessly trying to locate the suspect. At about 23:20 the team proceeded to the Mbimyani informal settlement in Cato Manor where the suspect was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition and was immediately arrested. The suspect will be profiled to determine if he is linked to other serious crimes committed in the province.

The firearm will also be subjected to a ballistics examination.

The Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thulani Gonya applauded the team for their great work. “We are pleased that the suspect has been arrested and will face the full might of the law,” he said.
