Armed balaclava-clad gang hold up Umgeni Park family

An Umgeni Park family escaped a home invasion unscathed yesterday after brave neighbours chased the balaclava-clad robbers away by pulling up outside their house and hooting repeatedly.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the resident had arrived home and pulled into the driveway of his property in Buckleigh Place at around 4.50pm.

“The resident didn’t notice anyone near his property when he drove in. After greeting his family, he tried to close the driveway gate but it wouldn’t shut, and two men wearing balaclavas and armed with what appeared to be shotguns or rifles appeared at the gate,” Mathios said. “A further three balaclava-clad suspects, armed with firearms and crowbars, ran into the property. The suspects forced the resident and his wife and children into the house where they demanded cash and jewellery and to know where the safe was kept,” Mathios said.

“A vigilant neighbour drove past the house during the ordeal and noticed the armed suspects at the driveway gate. She drove to her home and informed a male neighbour who then drove up to the victim’s home and started to repeatedly press his vehicle’s hooter to sound the alarm,” Mathios said. “The suspects ran out of the house and jumped into a white Mercedes Benz A Class. They fled the scene with cash and jewellery. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.”

Greenwood Park SAPS and the chairman of the Community Policing Forum attended the scene of the crime.

In a separate incident North of Durban, a resident was hijacked in Halse Avenue in Mount Edgecombe at around 8.20pm last night. “The resident had just pulled into his driveway when four armed suspects ambushed him and forced him to get out of his vehicle and lie on the ground. The suspects then banged on the front door of the house but did not gain entry before fleeing in the hijacked vehicle,” Mathios said.

The SAPS Phoenix Crime Prevention Unit attended the scene. Police later recovered the vehicle where the suspects had abandoned it in KwaMashu.
