On 3 February 2019, at 06:00, Nkandla police were alerted by a member of the community of a newborn baby in a dust bin at Ithala Centre in Nkandla.

The police responded and found a newborn baby girl inside a dust bin in a plastic bag covered with blanket. The baby was taken to hospital for medical attention. Her mother is unknown and a case of child abandonment was opened at the Nkandla police station for investigation.

The Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is investigating the case.
