Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: I wish to commend our highly energized team from Road Traffic Inspectorate for their execution of Alufakwa – Zero Tolerance and No Nonsense campaign in Newcastle.

By arresting 106 motorists for drunk driving by 01:30 this morning, the team has displayed a high level of firmness and commitment to protecting innocent road users from reckless drivers.

Once again, we wish to warn motorists.

Drink, drive, and earn yourself a criminal record as well as detention in holding cells for a maximum of 48 hours before you are granted bail or before your next court appearance.

We are encouraged by the show of support from ordinary members of society as we remove irresponsible motorists from our road networks.

These individuals have inflicted suffering on many families, with widows, orphans, and people living with disabilities created.

For instance, public records indicate that in 2022 alone, 12,436 people died on the road.

To complicate matters, over 100,000 people are seriously injured per year. Males account for 75% of fatalities.

We have agreed with Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that we will strengthen the multidisciplinary operations this Transport Month until the festive season and beyond.

We have a responsibility to deal decisively with those who are undermining public safety through excessive alcohol consumption.

Critically, the MEC for Health Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi is deploying health professionals to administer blood samples as we execute our operations. This will ensure successful prosecution.

We have agreed to work together to ensure the reduction in trauma unit admissions for alcohol-related injuries.
