Alert police rescue hijacked e-hailing taxi driver, Durban

On Friday night 18 September 2020, at 20:25, an e-hailing driver received a request to pick up a client from Umbilo to Montclair. Upon his arrival at Umbilo, two unknown males asked to be dropped off at Montclair.

One suspect sat at the front and the other one sat at the rear passenger seat. On their arrival at Montclair, Strydom Place, when they were about to jump off, the suspect that was sitting at the back pulled out the firearm and instructed the driver to lie down between the seats. They drove off with him, while they were driving along Alamein Road, police noticed a suspicious vehicle and it was then stopped.

A search was conducted and one of the suspects was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with eleven rounds of ammunition. Both suspects aged 21 and 27 were placed under arrest for charges of carjacking, possession of illegal firearm and ammunition. They are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thulani Gonya commended the police officers for the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the firearm.
