PHOENIX – An 8-year-old boy is fighting for his life following a severe dog attack in the Sunford area of Phoenix, an incident that has prompted urgent warnings from KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services regarding responsible pet ownership. The young child sustained life-threatening injuries after two dogs escaped from a nearby residential property and mauled him and his father on a Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred along Bramford when the two dogs charged at the child and his family member. In a moment of terror, the 8-year-old attempted to hide behind his father for protection. The father desperately intervened to shield his son and fight off the animals, sustaining multiple bite wounds across his body in the process.
KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, where medics encountered the severely injured child, his wounded father, and another resident. Two patients were immediately stabilized and rapidly transported to a hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The medical ordeal continued later that same evening when KZN VIP medics were called back to the hospital. The child’s condition required further urgent intervention and life-saving surgery. He was subsequently transferred under medical care to a specialist hospital for ongoing treatment.
In a formal statement, KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services emphasized that disturbing footage accompanying the incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers that can unfold within seconds when dogs escape from a property. The organization stressed that while dogs may be loving and friendly within their own homes, responsible pet ownership requires recognizing that an animal can still pose a severe danger to the public, particularly a frightened and defenseless child.
KZN VIP issued a direct appeal to all pet owners to secure their animals. The organization advised residents to check gates and fencing to ensure animals cannot escape onto the road, warning against the assumption that a familiar dog will not bite.
“A child should be able to walk down a road with his father without being attacked,” the organization stated. “A parent should never have to physically fight off animals while watching his child being mauled. Responsible pet ownership can prevent another family from experiencing this nightmare.”
KZN VIP concluded by wishing the young boy and his father strength during their recovery, expressing hope that this devastating incident serves as a serious warning throughout local communities.
