A 64 year old man was killed in a hit and run accident on Ireland Street in the Verulam CBD, KZN this afternoon 29 September 2018.

At approximately 15:46 members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from passing motorists requesting assistance for the critically injured man. Upon arrival Medics attempted to stabilise the pedestrian however due to the extent of his injuries he died at the scene.

The incident was captured on CCTV. The footage shows the deceased exiting a spares shop carrying a gallon of oil and standing on the pavement waiting to cross the road. A purple Toyota Quantum taxi was stationary on the side of the road and suddenly took off and drove over the elderly man.

The gallon of oil was found several meters away from the point of impact. The taxi did not stop at the scene.

Police are investigating further.
