On 11 June 2020, the Ilembe Cluster Rapid Response Team was conducting routine patrols in the KwaDukuza and surrounding areas when they received information about suspects involved in a business robbery at Maphumulo.

It is alleged that five armed suspects entered a shop at Plangweni in Maphumulo and robbed the shop owner of cash and airtime vouchers at gunpoint. Police were informed that suspects boarded a minibus taxi and were heading towards KwaDukuza.

The team conducted a stop and search on the R74 highway following possible leads regarding the suspects. A taxi was intercepted on the R74 in Stanger Manor and a search was conducted. Upon searching the vehicle, cash and airtime vouchers were recovered from the suspects.

A total of five suspects aged between 22 and 27 were placed under arrest. One of the suspects was found in possession of a home-made firearm and ammunition.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Maphumulo Magistrate’s Court next week on charges of robbery and one of the suspects will face an additional charge for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
