4 armed business robbers arrested, Wentworth, Durban

On 29 December 2017, at 10:30, Wentworth SAPS together with Durban Flying Squad and Umlazi K9 Unit responded to a business robbery at Brooklyn road, Wentworth.

It is alleged that the employees were held by a group of armed suspects at a business premises. At gunpoint the suspects took cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash from the tills. When the police arrived at the scene, the suspects had already left.

The police started their search at the flats in Wentworth and the first suspect was apprehended in Alabama Road where he was hiding. A bag with an unlicensed firearm with ammunition, okapi knife and two cellphones were confiscated by the police.

The second suspect was arrested in Constatia road while hiding at a park on top of a tree. The other suspect attempted to stab the police officer and a shot was fired injuring him on the foot. The fourth suspect was arrested at a local service station.

All the arrested suspects are aged between 22 and 35. Charges of business robbery,attempted murder, possession of a suspected stolen property, possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of an unlicensed firearm are being investigated by Wentworth SAPS. They are expected to appear in court soon.

“The arrested suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other robberies committed in Durban and surrounding area. The police officers in the province are committed in rooting-out the criminals who are terrorizing our citizens as well as the business owners. We will ensure that all those involved in criminal activities are brought to book”, said the KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
