On 2 December 2021, at 16:00, the Umbilo Task Team conducted a stop and search operation on a vehicle with no number plates on Rick Turner Avenue. This was after a similar vehicle was circulated earlier during the day having committed two armed robberies in the Bellair area.

The team searched four men aged between 21 and 26 years old who were in the vehicle and found a toy firearm as well as five cellphones in their possession.

Whilst interviewing the suspects, police received information that someone was reporting an armed robbery of a cellphone at the Umbilo Community Service Centre. The complainant positively identified the vehicle and suspects who had robbed her. Her cell phone was among the five recovered in the vehicle.

Detectives from Bellair SAPS were also able to link the suspects to their cases.

The suspects will be profiled to establish if they are linked to other cases reported in the Ethekwini District.

The suspects were detained for armed robbery at Umbilo SAPS and will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday, 6 December 2021.
