2 arrested for bribery King Shaka International Airport

The Hawks’ Durban Serious Corruption Unit together with the SARS Fraud Investigation Unit arrested two suspects aged 52 and 60 for alleged bribery at the King Shaka International Airport.

Members acted on information on Wednesday 22 November 2017, after it surfaced that the suspects were attempting to bribe SARS Customs officials to release a detained container.

It was established by Customs officials that the container was full of counterfeit goods which amongst others include soccer kits, children and adult sneakers valued at approximately R12 million.

The suspects allegedly offered SARS officials more than R500 000.00 in cash to release the container.

A joint sting operation by the Hawks and SARS ensued which led to the arrest of the suspects with the loot. A search of the suspects’ vehicle, members confiscated a further R80 000 in the boot.

They are expected to appear in the Durban Special Commercial Crime Court on Friday, 24 November 2017 pending further investigations.
