On 16 August 2018, Maphumulo police received a complaint of a shooting at Makumbi area and their rapid response led to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the firearms.

Police were following up on a robbery incident that had occurred last night in the KwaDukuza policing precinct. It is alleged that on 15 August 2018 at 20:30, three unknown males accosted security guards at their workplace in Maurice Perry Road, tied them up and robbed them of 13 pistols, four cellphones and fled in their company vehicle.

A case of robbery was opened at KwaDukuza police station for investigation.

Whilst attending to the shooting complaint, Maphumulo police were joined by ILembe Cluster members and suspects driving the stolen Tata vehicle were spotted in the Maphumulo policing precinct. When the suspects saw the police, there was an exchange of gunfire which resulted in the death of one suspect, the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of eight firearms.

None of the police officers were injured and more arrests are imminent. The suspects will appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court soon. They will be charged for attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, possession of stolen property and robbery.
