Kuruman farmer shot and killed in farm attack

Christo Kruger (64), a farmer from the Kuruman district, was shot dead by assailants on Thursday May 28, 2015 at 20:00 on his farm, Byron.

Kruger was shot in the chest after he went to investigate a noise he heard outside his home. He died on the scene. His wife, Vera, who was inside the house at the time of the attack, is unharmed.

Joe Scholtz, Agri Northern Cape chairperson of rural security, said the crime is strongly condemned. “Such incidents harm the image of agriculture and threaten food security for our country,” he said.

“We hope that the police investigation will yield results soon, so that the necessary legal processes can be completed and the perpetrators can be brought to justice. Agri Northern Cape together with all sectors of society in South Africa are extremely concerned about the growing influence of crime in South Africa and the suffering it brings.”

Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety, told Maroela Media on Friday afternoon that one suspect was already arrested for Kruger’s murder.

Lt. Sergio Kock, police spokesman, however, denied this and said the police are still busy with the investigation.
