It’s all up to prayer, says family of mom shot by cop

A Strand mother of two, who was allegedly shot in the head by her police officer boyfriend, is in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Warrant Officer Nevell du Toit, 44, shot Zaheda Peters, 32, at her home in Dolphin Street in Strand at about 05:00 on Monday. He died after turning the gun on himself.

It is believed Du Toit went to her home and shot her in the arm, reported the Daily Voice and Cape Argus. She then apparently ran outside, desperately calling for help while the policeman chased after her.

He then shot her in the head before shooting himself.

Peters’s uncle, Noor Rhode, told News24 on Tuesday morning that she was still in ICU and was critical but stable.

“Under the circumstances, the family is coping, and it is all up to prayer,” Rhode said.

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has launched an investigation into the Strand tragedy, Eyewitness News reported.

Du Toit was stationed in the detective unit at Macassar police station.
