Inquiry into George taxi violence

About 26 taxis face losing their operating licences follows violent protests that took place in George nine days ago.

On August 19 Uncedo George Taxi Association members barricaded roads and burnt vehicles‚ the Western Cape’s transport and public works department said on Friday.

“The Western Cape Provincial Regulatory Entity (PRE) will hold a second round of hearings to consider the possible cancellation of up to 26 taxi operating licences in George‚” it said.

The department is responsible for regulating public transport services and to ensure the safety of commuters.

“Operators found guilty of inciting violence or damaging property run the risk of having their operating licences cancelled‚” the department said.

The public has been asked to make available any videos and photographs of the demonstration to help identify people who acted violently.

The inquiry will take place during the first week of October 2015 in George.
