Johannesburg – Wits University students, who earlier took their protest to the streets, have started moving back to the campus.

News24 reporter at the scene Jeanette Chabalala said while traffic had ground to a complete halt, Empire Road near the campus was now open.

“Most of the cars turned back. The road is open, but there are still rocks strewn in the road,” said Chabalala.

She said the atmosphere was still volatile, with hundreds of students singing, “Dubula, Dubula” (“Shoot, shoot”).

“The atmosphere is very tense. They are ready to fight,” said Chabalala, adding that students had prevented motorists and bikers from passing.

Johannesburg metro police were on the scene.

Hundreds of students were wielding sticks and rocks, she said.

They were protesting against proposed fee hikes for 2016.
