How deadly KZN gun battle unfolded

Durban – Police shot dead four men in KwaNdengezi after a high-speed chase on Wednesday night. Police spotted a suspicious black GTI golf, with five occupants, at the intersection of Hans Dettman and Higginson Highway at about 7pm.

A police source said the men on the back seat slumped down to try to avoid being seen.

The driver stopped, but as the police got out of their car, the driver of the Golf sped off, the source said.

A high-speed chase then ensued towards KwaNdengezi, Mariannhill.

The driver of the Golf was driving recklessly.

Along the main road, the Golf smashed into the back of a white Golf.

The impact caused one of the back wheels of the white Golf to come off.

The black Golf came to a halt about 100m from the collision.

When the police stopped behind the black Golf, the men inside it got out and began shooting at the police.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said the suspects had initiated the shooting and the police returned fire.
