Hijacker shot and killed, two arrested

A carjacking incident that occurred in the Umbilo Policing area on January 7, 2015, resulted in a high way pursue between members of the Brighton Beach Task Team and the carjackers.

The pursue ended at the intersection of the Umlazi Mangosuthu High Way and Prince Mshiyeni Rd, resulting in the death of one of the suspects and the arrest of two others.

The victim a women aged 39 and her son was standing outside their vehicle near the China Mall situated in the Umbilo policing area, when they were approached by two men with firearms in hand demanding the vehicle from the owner, the victim and her son ran away and the suspects took the vehicle.

Sergeant Robert Jooste, Constable Mohammed Rasool and Constable Ernest Nene of the Brighton Beach Cluster Task Team were conducting patrols on the M4 when a description of the hijackers vehicle was circulated indicating that the perpetrators were traveling in a Southerly direction towards Umlazi.

The Brighton Beach Cluster Task members waited at the Umlazi off ramp South bounds for the carjackers. When the suspects spotted the marked vehicle they started shooting at the police vehicle, and SAPS members returned fire. At the Umlazi Mangosuthu High Way and Prince Mshiyeni Rd intersection the driver of the vehicle conducted a hand break turn, yet the vehicle stalled.

Two of the suspects alighted from the vehicle with one shooting at the police members, a pursue on foot commenced and in the cross fire one of the suspects was fatally wounded.

Two suspects were apprehended and one suspect is still at large.

The firearm that was found next to the body of suspect that was fatally wounded in the cross fire and it has been send for ballistics analysis to establish if such has been used in the commission of other firearm related crimes.

The two remaining suspects will be charged with carjacking and attempted murder on police. They will appear in the Durban Regional Court Monday for a first appearance, bail will be opposed.

Sergeant Robert Jooste, Constable Mohammed Rasool and Constable Ernest Nene are commended for apprehending the suspects, recovering the stolen vehicle and firearm, and for achieving all of this during cross fire without causing injury or death to civilians or any harm coming to them.

The Cluster task team was established in September 2014 with the sole purposes being to address trio crimes within the Brighton Beach Cluster Policing Area which includes Brighton Beach, Montclair , Wentworth, Mayville, Cato Manor and Umbilo.

Since their establishment they have recovered 24 firearms and 41 hijacked vehicles including 32 suspects for hijacking , and apprehend 6 suspects for business robberies and 4 for house robberies, of which majority of the cases were for the Brighton Beach Cluster Policing area.
