Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has invited South Africans to make inputs on what they would like to see reflected in the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS).

On Friday, the Minister in a tweet urged South Africans to share their wish list for the MTBPS. Mboweni will deliver his maiden MTBPS in Parliament on Wednesday.

“Let us do something unusual which will annoy the Establishment. If you were Minister of Finance, what would you announce on Wednesday next week [?] It is time for the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS). Over to you. Don’t tell the Establishment about this tweet!!” he tweeted.

The National Budget, he explained in a subsequent tweet, “is basically: revenue collection (taxes), expenditure (allocations for departments, provinces, municipalities, deficit and debt management and strategic plans, e.g. sorting out the water issues in the Vaal River). Using the budget strategically to transform the economy”.

National Treasury on Sunday posted pictures of the Minister and National Treasury and SA Reserve Bank officials finalising the Medium Term Budget Speech.

Mboweni’s tweet has been widely commended by South Africans from across the board, including former Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela, actor Hlomla Dandala, Member of Parliament Bantu Holomisa and social activist Yusuf Abramjee, among others. – SAnews.gov.za
