Although it looks as if the country is seemingly green, and while the dam levels compare favorably with last year’s this time, agriculturalists warn that there is a green drought in the country.
The extremely high temperatures, which often accompany relatively strong winds, cause the soil moisture to be very low. In some areas, farmers could not begin planting, while the planting season during the summer rainfall areas passed quickly.
In addition to the Western Cape, the dam levels in the provinces are currently higher than last year. The provinces’ levels (with last year’s position in brackets) are: Northern Transvaal 66,8% (48,5); Eastern Transvaal 73.3% (57.2); Western Transvaal 74.2% (57.1); Central Transvaal 89,7% (81,8); Free State 68.4% (50.2); Natal 46.8% (41.9); Northern Cape 96.5% (53.4); Eastern Cape 60,3% (58,7) and Western Cape 31,4% (49,0).
