Wynand Labuschagne (27), a world renowned expert in the design and build of exhaust systems for motorcycles especially used in racing sport was shot dead during a house robbery in Brentwood Park, Benoni early Friday morning.

He would have been engaged for a year today to Sumandi Janse van Rensburg. Labuschagne heard his dogs bark during the night and got up to investigate. He saw that 3 black males were busy breaking in by lifting the sliding door of its rails.

He shouted at them. One of the intruders fired a shot which hit Wynand in the heart. He died outside the flat in the garden. Wynand was a talented sportsman who played Cravenweek rugby and he was also a SA judo champion. His rugby career was cut short by an injury.

Wynand worked for the company Powersport. He and his employer Neil van Aswegen designed exhaust systems for superbikes for the international racing circuit but Wynand then built it with his own hands. The world champion in the 600 cc class, Rob Hartog from the Netherlands, uses an exhaust system designed and built by Wynand.

Wynand also leaves his brother and sister, Arno and Rene, and his parents Johan and Charmaine behind.

The exact time of the incident was Friday morning at 0300.
