Gauteng government pays fees for arrested Wits student Mcebo Dlamini

University of Witwatersrand (Wits) student leader Mcebo Dlamini is expected to appear in the High Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to appeal last month’s decision to deny him bail.

The 30-year-old student faces charges of public violence, theft, malicious damage to property and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following his arrest at his Wits residence in October.

On October 21, the former Student Representative Council president and #FeesMustFall leader was allegedly on a hunger strike in prison. This was according to Nkululeko Tselane, one of #FeesMustFall activists and Wits student who visited him at the time together with three others.

Tselane, who is the son of Terry Tselane – the deputy chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, said Dlamini was locked in a single cell at the Johannesburg Correctional Services Center, aka Sun City.

“Mcebo is more or less fine. He says he has been on a hunger strike since Wednesday but I’m not sure what this entails. He is trying to comprehend what is going on outside as our activists are being harassed and shot at,” Tselane said.

However, the Department of Correctional Services spokesperson, Manelisi Wolela, dismissed the allegation.

The Gauteng department of education on Tuesday revealed that the province was paying the fees for Dlamini to pursue a Master of Laws degree at Wits.

Wits students have been mobilising support for Dlamini and they are expected to turn out in their number at the Palm Ridge courts.
