Police in Gauteng remains resolute in the fight against crime and ensuring that people in the province are and feel safe.

This past weekend, over one thousand and three hundred people were arrested throughout the province during various crime prevention operations which included; roadblocks, raiding taverns, performing stop and searches and tracing of wanted suspects by the detectives.

Approximately 400 of these suspects were arrested in Johannesburg District where the Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, led the integrated Operation O Kae Molao at Alexandra on Saturday, 27 August 2022.

During this operation several people were arrested for different crimes such as driving while under the influence of alcohol, possession of unlicensed firearms, dealing and possession of drugs. Other suspects were arrested during the tracing of wanted suspects who committed offences that include rape, murder, assault, housebreaking and theft, armed robbery, fraud, sexual assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Furthermore, 454 people were also arrested in Ekurhuleni District while 253 suspects were apprehended in Tshwane District, 211 in West Rand District and 69 in Sedibeng District.

The police also seized unlicensed firearms, drugs, dangerous weapons and liquor at illegal shebeens.

Some of the suspects were released after paying fines while others are expected to appear before various Magistrates’ Courts from Monday, 29 August 2022.
