ALEXANDRA, JOHANNESBURG – Violent protests and looting in Alexandra Township have left local residents shaken after unrest erupted near the intersection of 8th Avenue and Joe Nhlanhla Street. The sporadic violence and widespread property damage followed a series of coordinated marches that took place across the country earlier in the day.
The unrest in the township, located just north of Johannesburg, escalated into the evening hours after nationwide demonstrations were held in the Johannesburg CBD, Soweto, and eThekwini. As the day progressed, the marches in Alexandra transitioned into sporadic violence, resulting in the looting of several local shops and multiple shooting incidents.
During the chaos, residents reported hearing ongoing gunfire, which significantly heightened tensions throughout the area. Local police spokespersons confirmed that one person was shot and killed during the unrest. However, law enforcement representatives at the scene noted that it remains unconfirmed at this stage whether the fatality was directly linked to the protest activities. Authorities are currently awaiting official statements to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the death and the identity of the perpetrators.
In response to the escalating situation, police and private security personnel were rapidly deployed to the area to contain the unrest. According to police spokespersons on the ground, the violence and protests have since been successfully contained. The situation around the Alexandra Police Station was described as calm, with law enforcement remaining on high alert to ensure peace is maintained throughout the evening.
While the immediate vicinity has returned to a state of calm without any active sporadic protests, community leaders and local police are working to provide further updates as the situation develops. Residents and business owners are now waiting for clarity from authorities regarding the full extent of the looted shops and the official details surrounding the reported death.
