PRETORIA, GAUTENG — Millions of social grant recipients are being urged to finalize their SASSA Gold Card to Postbank Black Card switch before the strict 31 August 2026 cutoff. Postbank has issued a critical warning that the legacy gold cards will be permanently deactivated and phased out once this migration process concludes, potentially leaving unregistered beneficiaries unable to access their vital monthly funds.

Avoiding the August Rush

To avoid severe logistical bottlenecks, the financial institution is pleading with the public not to procrastinate until their normal pay dates or the final weeks of August.

Thamsanqa Cele, Postbank’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted that foot traffic at replacement venues is already climbing and warned against waiting until the last minute.

“We are already noticing a steady increase in queues at several of our card replacement sites and based on current trends, we anticipate that queues will become considerably longer in August, which is the final month before the deadline,” Cele explained.

He cautioned that those who delay risk facing “substantial delays due to the expected increase in demand.” While Postbank has mobilized extensive operational resources to facilitate the national migration program, the bank emphasizes that public cooperation is essential to utilize the remaining time effectively.

Where and How to Upgrade Your Card

The transition is designed to be as accessible as possible for the public. The new Postbank Black Cards can be collected at a wide network of major retail partners, specifically Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar.

These designated replacement sites operate nationwide from Monday through Friday, between 09:00 and 17:00. To find the closest venue, beneficiaries can simply dial 120 355# on their mobile devices.

The entire replacement procedure is completely free of charge. However, individuals must bring a valid South African green barcoded identity document or a temporary ID to verify their identity and complete the process.

Streamlining Customer Support

In an effort to streamline the process and reduce confusion, Postbank has explicitly advised the public to bypass SASSA local offices for any inquiries regarding the old gold cards or the new black cards. Unnecessary visits to SASSA branches will not expedite the banking transition.

Instead, recipients should direct their payment-related questions to the nearest Postbank service point or utilize the dedicated telephone support lines. Postbank’s specialized customer service agents are fully equipped to resolve a comprehensive range of issues. This includes troubleshooting missed disbursements, resetting PINs, reporting lost or stolen cards, processing card reissues, and fixing declined transactions.

Beneficiaries needing direct assistance can reach the Postbank call centre toll-free at 0800 5354 55.
