Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) remain resolute in addressing the proliferation of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and drugs in circulation within Gauteng province.

On Wednesday, 18 January 2023 police in Westrand District arrested two suspects, aged 23 and 24, in Spooktown, Bekkersdal on charges of possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs following an intelligence-driven operation.

According to a preliminary report a team consisting of members from Westrand District Crime Intelligence and SAPS Bekkersdal operationalised information and proceeded to the identified address in Spooktown, Bekkersdal.

Upon their arrival the team conducted a search which led to the recovery of an unlicensed firearm, live rounds of ammunition and Mandrax tablets.

The firearm will be subjected to a ballistic test to determine whether it is linked to other serious crimes committed
