Two Thai nationals, a 21-year-old male and a 25-year-old female, are set to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 30 May 2025, facing charges under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act (Act 140 of 1992).

The arrest followed a targeted operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Germiston. Acting on intelligence, officers monitored the suspects’ arrival at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, after their flight from Thailand.

Upon their landing, authorities identified and searched the two travelers, discovering 132 bags of compressed cannabis concealed within four of their luggage bags. The total weight of the seized drugs amounted to 116 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R500,000.

The suspects were immediately arrested for contravening South Africa’s drug trafficking laws, and the narcotics were confiscated as evidence.

The pair remains in custody pending their court appearance on Friday.
