JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has placed seven companies on its blacklist after a sweeping forensic investigation exposed serious unethical and unlawful conduct within its supplier network.

The crackdown, carried out with the assistance of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), uncovered a disturbing pattern of financial misconduct that included kickback schemes, bribery, theft of company assets, collusion, and the submission of false documentation.

The revelation marks one of the most significant integrity enforcement actions taken by the state-owned enterprise in recent years, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to corruption within South Africa’s critical logistics infrastructure.

Leadership Vows Uncompromising Stance

Jabu Mdaki, Chief Executive of Transnet Port Terminals, emphasized that the blacklist reflects the organization’s unwavering commitment to ethical business practices.

“Transnet Port Terminals remains committed to upholding the principles of good governance and conducting its business with the highest standards of integrity, transparency and accountability,” Mdaki stated. “Unlawful conduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

Mdaki underscored that the cleanup operation is essential to fulfilling TPT’s national mandate. “TPT has a mammoth task of enabling South Africa through our specialisation in maritime logistics where the country trades with over 100 markets in the world,” he explained.

“As a team, we are united in understanding that we exist to serve and there’s no room for anyone who does not share in that mission,” Mdaki added.

Internal Accountability Measures

Beyond targeting external suppliers, Transnet has moved decisively against internal officials who facilitated the corrupt arrangements. Disciplinary action has been initiated against TPT employees found to have colluded with the blacklisted companies.

According to Transnet, the blacklist forms part of a wider, systemic investigation currently underway across all of Transnet’s operating divisions, demonstrating that the corruption probe extends far beyond port operations.

Earlier this week, Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) suspended four employees based on similar allegations. Restrictions against implicated suppliers at TRIM are also being enforced as the investigation continues.

Broader Consequence Management

The current action builds on consequence management efforts that began earlier this year when Transnet announced the suspension of nine employees implicated in alleged collusion with suppliers.

Six of those nine employees have since left Transnet’s employment as a result of disciplinary action instituted against them. Disciplinary proceedings against the remaining employees are still in progress, the SOE confirmed.

Public Reporting Channels Remain Open

Transnet continues to encourage members of the public to report any suspected fraud or irregularity involving the organization through multiple channels:

  • Toll-free hotline: 0800 003 056
  • Email: Transnet.Reportit@outlook.com
  • SMS: 063 786 7403

While consequence management processes continue to unfold, Transnet stated that it is simultaneously implementing systemic improvements designed to detect and prevent the recurrence of such malfeasance in the future.

The comprehensive approach—combining forensic investigation, supplier blacklisting, employee disciplinary action, and systemic reform—represents a significant step toward restoring integrity within South Africa’s vital transport and logistics sector.
