The charred body of a four-year-old boy was discovered this morning in the ruins of a burnt-out house in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni. The child’s parents and his two-year-old sibling survived the blaze but sustained minor injuries.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, the fire broke out early this morning, with authorities receiving the distress call at approximately 8:01 AM. Emergency responders arrived to find the house engulfed in flames, with the family trapped inside.
William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, confirmed that while the parents and the younger child were rescued, the four-year-old boy could not be saved.
“After extinguishing the blaze, we conducted a search and recovered the charred body of the child from the rubble,” Ntladi said. “The cause of the fire is still undetermined, and SAPS forensics are investigating.”
The surviving family members, suffering from minor burn wounds and smoke inhalation, were taken to the hospital for treatment. A neighbor who assisted in the rescue also sustained minor injuries.
Psychosocial support has been provided to the grieving family, with counselors from emergency services and the police offering assistance.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke detectors to prevent similar tragedies.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
