Trafficking in persons, accused handed life sentence

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation has secured life imprisonment for Okwudilichukwu Bobokwu Idoko (43) in the North Gauteng High Court on Friday, 30 March 2023 for Contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act, Sexual Offenses Related Act and Immigration Act.

Okwudilichukwu was arrested on the morning of Monday, 28 October 2019 in the Brakpan area.

He was arrested along with Ike Christopher Emeka Chukwu (53) and two other local ladies who were eventually acquitted after they turned out to be victims.

The court imposed a life sentence on Okwudilichukwu whilst Ike Christopher Emeka Chukwu received one year imprisonment suspended for five years with an option of R1000 fine.

Both have been declared undesirable persons, with Chukwu now handed to the Department of Home Affairs for a deportation process to be instituted.

The Gauteng Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Ebrahim Kadwa has lauded the investigators and prosecution team for a sterling job that resulted in the conviction and sentencing of the accused.
