Three suspects were fatally wounded, and one was arrested following a violent shootout with police on the N1 Freeway in Sandton on Thursday.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded after police received intelligence about suspects linked to a house robbery in Randburg earlier that day. The perpetrators had stolen several appliances and the victim’s VW Polo.

A coordinated response involving the Gauteng Highway Patrol, Gauteng Traffic Airwing, and Cap Security led to the identification of both the suspects’ vehicle and the stolen VW Polo. As officers attempted to stop the suspects on the N1 Highway, the suspects opened fire, prompting an exchange of gunfire.

Three suspects were fatally wounded during the confrontation, while the fourth, who was driving the stolen VW Polo, was arrested as he attempted to flee the scene.

Police recovered two firearms and the stolen appliances believed to have been taken during the Randburg house robbery. Investigators suspect the group is part of a larger syndicate responsible for multiple house robberies in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.

The arrested suspect faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, house robbery, and possession of suspected stolen property.

Further investigations are underway.
