Police have confirmed that three people were shot and killed in a brazen attack on Saturday night in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg. The incident occurred when three suspects opened fire on a group of nine young men standing outside a mosque.
Community Living in Fear
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but residents say gang violence has made the area a danger zone. SABC News reporters, escorted by police due to safety concerns, spoke with terrified community members who refused to be identified for fear of retaliation.
“We are crying for help,” one young woman said. “We live in fear every day. Even the police are afraid to come here unless someone is already dead.”
Witnesses described a white Audi pulling up before the suspects unleashed gunfire. The victims, reportedly friends and family members of local residents, had no chance to defend themselves.
Police Warn of Extreme Danger
Officers accompanying the news crew warned that Eldorado Park, particularly Extension 1, is plagued by gang violence, making it unsafe for journalists and civilians alike. “This place is extremely dangerous,” one officer said, urging the team to leave immediately after interviews.
Residents expressed frustration over the lack of police visibility, claiming law enforcement only responds after fatalities occur. “We can’t walk freely here,” another woman said. “Our lives are in danger every day.”
Youth Day Marred by Violence
The tragedy cast a shadow over Youth Day celebrations, with many young people too afraid to leave their homes. “We’ve lost too many brothers,” one resident said. “How can we celebrate when we’re not safe?”
Community members also highlighted unemployment as a driving force behind rising crime, with desperate youths turning to gangs for survival.
Authorities have yet to make arrests but vow to investigate. Meanwhile, Eldorado Park remains on edge, with residents pleading for urgent intervention.
