Gauteng police have confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the brutal assault of three teenagers accused of theft in Chiawelo, Soweto. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the death of a 20-year-old, while two 17-year-olds remain hospitalized.

Vigilante Justice Turns Deadly

According to police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the victims were allegedly held overnight in a house where they were tortured by community members demanding the return of a stolen amplifier and phones. The mother of the deceased recounted arriving at the scene to find her son and the other teens severely beaten, with bloodstains covering the area.

“They were bashed against the wall and assaulted in different ways to force them to confess,” said a family member. Despite pleas to negotiate payment for the missing items, the attackers allegedly continued the assault.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Nevhuhulwi confirmed that three suspects—two women (aged 27 and 30) and a 27-year-old man—have been arrested and charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. The suspects, who include the homeowners and a community member, appeared in court yesterday and were remanded in custody.

Authorities are still investigating whether more individuals were involved. Police have also recovered video evidence from witnesses, which is being analyzed as part of the case.

Condemnation of Vigilantism

Nevhuhulwi urged communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “If you suspect someone of a crime, apprehend them and call the police. Vigilantism is a criminal act,” she emphasized.

The missing amplifier and phones were never found, and police have no evidence linking the victims to the alleged theft.

Families Demand Justice

Grieving relatives expressed outrage over the attack, insisting their children were innocent. “They were willing to pay, but the beatings didn’t stop,” one mother said.

As investigations continue, authorities have not ruled out further arrests. The case has reignited concerns over mob justice in South African townships, where distrust in law enforcement sometimes leads to violent retribution.
