A 33 year old man suspected to have killed a person and seriously wounded eight (8) others during a shooting incident at the Hillbrow Theater in the early hours of the morning of 27 August 2017, has been arrested.

He was arrested at Thembisa Hospital where he is under police guard following his arrest during an armed robbery of a shop at Greenstone Mall on 27 August 2017, at about 09:00. The firearm allegedly used during the robbery was recovered.

It is alleged that the suspect jumped into the stage while a band was performing. He then grabbed a microphone and claimed that he will stop the band unless he get back his cell phone. Allegedly, the audience protested and he fired several shots randomly. He then fled the scene on foot.

He was arrested at the Greenstone Mall where a group of five suspects robbed a business yesterday morning. Police and mall security chased the suspects as they were fleeing after the robbery.

He was arrested and four others managed to escape. During his arrest, he sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital under police guard. Four others are still at large.

The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General Deliwe De Lange is satisfied that the suspect has been brought to book within 48 hours. “This has been the most horrible incident that has been experienced by the audience who were at the theatre to enjoy themselves. Police will never rest until the suspect get what he deserves. Justice will be allowed to take its course” adds the Commissioner.

The suspect will be charged with murder, attempted murder as well as armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm when he appears in court.

It is also suspected that he has been involved in other serious and violent crimes.
