The African National Congress (ANC) has accused a prominent Australian politician of trying to portray South Africa in a negative light, particularly the city of Johannesburg, by suggesting it is a crime haven.
Late on Wednesday, a group of inmates escaped from a youth detention facility in the state of Victoria, Australia.
Now a manhunt is underway for seven of the men who fled the facility located 100km north of the city of Melbourne.
This prompted the leader of the opposition in the parliament of Victoria, Matthew Guy to call for the sacking of the premier, saying the current government was “standing by and allowing Melbourne to become the Johannesburg of the South Pacific”.
The ANC wants the High Commission of Australia in Pretoria to clarify the comment.
